What is the Virtual Attendee Option?

Does your university continue to restrict your travel budget? We offer an option that will allow participants to make the conference come to them! The virtual attendee option provides the opportunity for individuals and institutions to attend select sessions of the conference via live webcast services.

A selection of sessions will be broadcast live, including the keynote and plenary sessions, featured sessions, select information sessions, and key vendor showcase sessions.  On-demand access of all recorded sessions is provided to onsite and virtual attendees post-conference for one year.

Why choose the virtual attendee option?
  • On-demand access to all recorded sessions is provided to onsite and virtual attendees post-conference for one year.  To access streamed sessions, participants need to be logged in at onlinelearningconsortium.org.
  • Participate despite schedule or budget restraints.  If your schedule or budget does not allow for the trip or your institution does not support travel outside of your state, the virtual attendee option provides a full-scale online experience.
  • Virtual schedule provides excellent breadth and depth of the program offered. Selected sessions to be live broadcast include the keynote and plenary sessions,  featured sessions, select information sessions, and key vendor showcase sessions.  Select workshops are also available via live broadcast.
  • View live webcast or on-demand recordings.  Onsite and virtual option attendees have access to on-demand recordings of the sessions for up to one year post-conference at no additional cost.  No need to re-arrange your schedule to view a particular session...access the recording at your leisure!
  • New for 2015: Virtually participate in Discovery Sessions. Discovery session presenters will be encouraged to upload their presentation materials to VoiceThread, where virtual participants can view and comment on these sessions.
  • Be a true participant of the conference. Special attention is paid to integrate the onsite event with the virtual event. Virtual attendees will be able to post questions in each session and participate in discussions via our OLC Facebook Group.  We also invite all virtual participants to Tweet their comments on sessions using our Twitter hashtag #et4online.
  • Pilot Virtual Buddy Program - Virtual conference participation - like you've never tried it before!
Virtual participation can be awesome. You get to listen to talks, chat with other participants, and have a Twitter back channel, all without leaving your desk. But what if it could be even more than that?

Out of a conversation between Maha Bali and Rebecca Hogue, an idea was born. Maha will be a virtual participant at ET4Online again, and is particularly upset about the missed opportunity to meet people at breakfast, lunch, and between sessions... We both realized that by Rebecca bringing Maha to the more social aspects of the conference virtually (e.g. via hangout or similar video conference tool), it could enrich the conference experience for both of us. We decided to call the pilot project a virtual buddy program (#et4buddy).

During pre-selected conference activities (such as social events), the virtual buddy program partners a virtual conference participant with participants who are physically at the conference. The partners connect using video conferencing, allowing the physical participant to share the experience with the virtual participant. The goal of the program is to enhance the conference experience for both the virtual participant and the physical presence participant.

This year, the program is being piloted with Rebecca J. Hogue (physical participant) as the main buddy for Maha Bali (virtual participant). However, other virtual participants can join hangouts (and with permission, these will be recorded and shared via #et4buddy on Twitter), and other in-person participants would be on the other side with Rebecca or can initiate hangouts if their bandwidth allows. During the unconference on Friday afternoon, we will encourage more people to try out the virtual buddy concept.

Many thanks to Whitney Kilgore for coordinating the logistics and ensuring that Rebecca has a MiFi connection to make this whole idea possible - special thanks to iDesignEDU for providing MiFi for this project.

Throughout the conference, we’ll be using #et4buddy to let you know what’s planned.

Who's in? If interested, tweet to #et4buddy or to @bali_maha and @rjhogue - we will create a twitter list of people interested in participating on one side or the other.

You can also watch our hangout discussing the idea on Wednesday 4/22 at noon Central.

*If your group is purchasing a Group Virtual Package, the designated Group Manager must purchase this package first.  Upon completion of this package registration, the Group Manager will receive the allotted number of package participant coupon codes to assign and distribute to each participant in their group. Each participant will then register themselves as an "Individual" Virtual Attendee and enter their unique package participant coupon code.

Refund request must be made in writing to the Online Learning Consortium by March 23, 2015 and will be issued a refund less a $75 administrative fee. After March 23 refund requests will not be honored but the respective registration fee received can be applied to future OLC conferences. For conference registration cancelations 72 hours or less to conference start date, only 50% of the remaining balance, including optional items, (less the $75 administrative fee charged for a cancelation) can be applied as credit to a future conference registation. For conference attendees who have purchased optional item tickets (awards lunch, etc.), there will be no refunds and no exchanges within 1 week of conference start date. If you are not able to attend, a substitute may attend in your place. The name of the substitute must be emailed to the Online Learning Consortium. If you do not attend the program and do not submit a written refund request, the Online Learning Consortium will retain all fees. The Online Learning Consortium is not responsible for any change / cancellation charges assessed by airlines, travel agents, hotels or other similar vendors.

Registration questions may be addressed to Laurie Lulow, laurie.lulow@onlinelearning-c.org.
