IE faculty training best practices. We support our professors to lead students from diverse backgrounds to participate in a fast changing collaborative and technological environment.

Extended Abstract

On this presentation we will share IE Business School best practices in blended faculty development, training, and support. We will focus on the challenges, opportunities and the effectiveness of our faculty training process. Our approach addresses both technical and pedagogical aspects and is based on quality learning design.

Online training is a consolidated reality at IE Business School, and one of our strategic goals, as it allows us to create an international student and faculty environment. E-learning education at IE offers a wide range of blended programs of international recognition. The latest rating from The Economist Distance-learning MBA gave IE the number one position in the world.

IE ONLINE MODEL: is based on the case method, and focused on collaborative learning, strong interaction among students and professors. One of the key elements of our model is the role of the professor as leader in online sessions. For this reason one of our priorities is to support and constantly train our professors, offering them technological and pedagogical advice. Our faculty faces online teaching as an opportunity to use technology to foster collaboration and challenge students in the learning process, to succeed in a changeable and demanding reality. Every year more than 500 members of our faculty teach blended courses.

1. RESISTANCE: Our first challenge when supporting the faculty is to overcome the prejudices some professors may have when facing an online program. They experience a certain resistance to change, and they often mistrust technology as an alternative channel compared to traditional sessions.

2. DESIGN: Another challenge is that each subject has its own peculiarities and they need different approaches to work in an online environment. So we need to design new dynamics and proper methodologies, specific for each case, in order to create significant learning experiences.

3. TECHNOLOGY: changes continuously and new tools and resources appear every day. We have to be ready to innovate through emerging technologies while ensuring instructional quality.


The IE Learning Innovation team, made up of 36 professionals, serves online students and professors across the globe.

As professors have different backgrounds, technological skills, and attitudes towards online education we have designed an individualized approach when training our faculty to meet these diverse needs.

During the session the presenter will explain each of the components of IE faculty development process sharing specific examples, resources and best practices with the audience.

ASSESSMENT & MOTIVATION: First of all we analyze the aptitudes of each professor to offer personal support, adjusted to the particular necessities of each member of the faculty. Our premise is to engage and motivate them so they feel confident on a virtual environment.

IE ONLINE METHODOLOGY: We are extremely demanding when applying our online methodology. We have discarded self-study models in which students decide their own working pace. As mentioned earlier, interaction among students and professors is the key element of our model. When training our faculty, first we make sure they understand our methodology, what the rules are, the role of the professor as leader and how debates and videoconferences are carried out in online sessions.

ONLINE DYNAMICS DESIGN: We continually support and give advice to our professors when adapting their onsite dynamics to the virtual environment. Our challenge is not only technology but learning design. We continually innovate and ensure the quality and effectiveness of the educational progress.

TOOLS: We train our faculty members in the use of the different tools such as: IE Campus, forums, videoconferences, quizzes, blogs, wikis, simulations (Blackboard, Adobe connect). We practice with them to improve their skills simulating the actual environment of online sessions. This allows them to make readjustments when necessary before approaching real sessions.

SUPERVISION: When teaching online, professors are continually monitored by our team to give them feedback and pedagogical advice about their performance. The quality of the online teaching process remains our top priority.

TECHNICAL SUPPORT & INNOVATION: Technology must work to guarantee a correct development of the blended programs. For this reason our faculty can reach "Helpdesk" our technical support service, any time to solve technical issues, or to be trained on the use of new online tools.

RESOURCES: We understand professor development as a constant process, so we offer our faculty onsite seminars, videoconferences, videotutorials, communities and blogs in order to share new tools and technology, best practices teaching online, different learning experiences, and new ideas to improve online teaching.

OPEN MULTIMEDIA: some of the most powerful tools, developed at IE, are our multimedia case studies, simulations, online games, interactive graphs and exercises. We promote the production and use of the multimedia resources among our professors.

The effectiveness of our faculty training process is endorsed by survey results, and feedback from the professors. During the presentation we will detail the process we follow on each of these stages to provide a valuable take-away for the audience.
