Participants will learn about principles of cognition relevant to online teaching and learning and generate their own ideas for learning experiences based on this research .

Extended Abstract

Time and again, educational leaders have called for a more scientific approach to teaching and learning, especially in the case of teaching with technology. Research findings from cognitive and brain sciences are particularly relevant to improving our teaching, given that these disciplines focus on how we acquire new information and learn to use it in new contexts. Unfortunately, non-specialists face major hurdles in their quest to extract meaningful, useful information from cognitive and brain research, given the preponderance of specialized jargon, obscure research methodologies and similar roadblocks. Furthermore, theoretical knowledge of key processes - particularly memory and attention - has advanced and changed dramatically in recent years, so that information in the field rapidly goes out of date. Lastly, it is often unclear which findings are most relevant to teaching and learning, and how to use the relevant findings in real-world, complex teaching situations.

This workshop is geared to educators and instructional designers who are passionate about teaching with technology and want to learn how to improve what they do via cognitive science. Participants will gain a foundation of up-to-date, relevant conceptual knowledge from cognitive psychology, with a particular emphasis on memory and attention. They will then apply these concepts to specific arenas and challenges we face within teaching with technology, producing their own ideas for how to create long-lasting, engaging and challenging learning experiences.

The presenter of this interactive will be drawing on her 20 years of experience as a researcher and teacher in the field of cognitive psychology and cognitive neuroscience, as well as on themes from her book in progress tentatively titled Minds Online: What Cognitive and Brain Sciences Tell Us About Teaching with Technology.

Lead Presenter
Michelle Miller Michelle D. Miller (Ph.D., University of California, Los Angeles) is Professor of Psychology at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona.  Dr. Miller's academic background is in cognitive psychology and behavioral neuroscience, with specializations in memory and language.  Dr. Miller's scholarly interests include applied memory research, psychological impacts of technology, and student success in the early college career.  Dr. Miller helped create the First-Year Learning Initiative at Northern Arizona University and is also active in course redesign, serving as a Redesign Scholar for the National Center for Academic Transformation (NCAT) and as director of course redesign initiatives at NAU.  She currently serves as a President's Distinguished Teaching Fellow at NAU.  Dr. Miller has published her work on evidence-based pedagogy in Teaching of Psychology, College Teaching, Journal of Online Learning and Teaching and Change: The Magazine of Higher Learning.  She is currently working on a book for Harvard University’s education press on cognitive perspectives on educational technology.
