This research presentation examines the question: What BLM PD design factors need to be considered to increase teacher engagement in learning?

Extended Abstract

Traditional teacher professional development (PD) often ignores the unique needs of specialty teachers as school-based PD is primarily directed towards academic subject teachers. Some specialty area teachers are often the only teachers of their subject area within a school, isolation is a major obstacle preventing relevant collaborative learning. PD designs must take into account what motivates educators to engage in PD, what specific learning needs they have, and how to build resource-sharing communities of practice that extend beyond their school walls. This research discusses ways blended learning models (BLMs) might inspire and impact teacher learning and examines the question: What BLM PD design factors need to be considered to increase teacher engagement in learning? The key appears to be finding the balance between the relationship strengths of face-to-face PD and the more convenient and reflective advantages of online PD.

Lead Presenter

Heather has taught for 26 years in a variety of K-12 schools as well as at the University of Calgary and Mount Royal University. She is currently teaching in the Education and Schooling program at Mount Royal University where she is working with developing teachers. Her master's degree program in Educational Leadership and Management at Royal Roads University inspired investigation into the benefits of Blended Learning models. For her final research project she examined the question: In what ways is teacher engagement in learning impacted by a blended learning model for professional development?
