Davenport University reviewed student concern forms and student satisfaction to ascertain issues of extreme frustration in Online courses:This was our solution

Extended Abstract

Davenport undertook a strategic initiative to review current state of Online courses. After mining these for issues of design and development that stemmed from student and faculty frustration it was apparent that a plan to rework the Online classroom (for use in-seat, Online and Blended) was needed. Working within the Blackboard limitations was one of the first challenges to overcome in order to meet University objectives. A multi-disciplinary plan was developed to rectify the challenges, meet the needs of faculty and students in various learning modalities. After one year the result has been 400 trained faculty, measurable reduction in student concern forms and complaints, an increase in student retention and success. Strategies included: using the concepts of universal design to create a new blackboard template used by the entire University, standards required for all courses, training for students and faculty, and processes captured in a Manual for use by all University faculty and staff. The standardized template, common language used in all courses and standards for learning have shortened the development time for courses and created a process of Collaborative Course Development Process. This process provides for an approach using the best of faculty subject matter expertise combined with the best of Online and Blended course development expertise.
