Abstract

Lessons learned as three teachers pilot using BYU Independent Study high school courses.

Extended Abstract

BYU Independent Study is a nonprofit online educational program that offers more than 550 online courses—university, high school, middle school, and free noncredit courses—to students throughout the United States and in over 90 foreign countries. Enrollment is open to anyone, anytime of the year, with a full year to complete most courses.

For the past two years we have piloted the use of our courses as part of a blended model. Initial evaluation suggests improvement in student learning. Over the next few months we will further evaluate these pilots. We plan to share lessons learned by the teachers, students, and Independent Study support staff.
