Use the CoI Framework to increase student engagement, trust, and critical thinking and provide student value in both the online and blended course formats.

Extended Abstract

The goal of this session is to provide ideas for increasing the sense of community and learning in the F2F and online sessions that are part of blended classes.

The Community of Inquiry framework was developed by D. Randy Garrison (2009) and combines community with learning to improve the overall educational experience. Three intersecting presences (teaching, social, and cognitive)combine to create a successful Community of Inquiry.

We will show you how you can make use of this framework to increase student engagement, trust, and critical thinking and provide student value in both the online and blended course formats, encouraging questions during the presentation.

We will discuss cognitive presence and its relationship to backward design, social presence and its relationship to trust among those in the classroom, and teaching presence and its relationship to a community of experts.

We will discuss face-to-face, blended, and/or online examples from our own classes and then ask you to provide examples you may be using to the group for further discussion.
