This session is in two parts. In the first, you will learn about the introduction of Academic/Corporate Online Learning Special Interest Group (A/COL). A significant percentage of Sloan-C member institutions are involved in providing educational programs and other services to corporations. Some colleges and universities have long-established relationships with a corporation (or group of corporations) and are quite skilled in corporate dealings; others wish to build up such relationships. To that end, Sloan-C seeks to set up an Academic/Corporate Online Learning Special Interest Group (A/COL) for the purpose of amplifying and enhancing these interactions and specifically generating new ones.

In the second part of the session, you will participate in small group discussions to begin sharing effective practices, establishing new relationships, and determine ways you can leverage A/COL resources to enhance or create new programs.

Lead Presenter

Nancy Hale (Pace University, USA)

Dr. Nancy Lynch Hale is the Special Program Chair, Outreach and Corporate Education Seidenberg School of Computer Science and Information Systems Pace University responsible for online programs including NACTEL, and iPace. Pace University’s online bachelor degrees were recognized by US News and World Report as number 1 in the United States in 2013. Dr. Hale has participated in extensive work with Sloan-C to explore online education within the University, corporate and K-12 communities.

Since 1977, Professor Hale has had curricula and staffing responsibilities for the Technology Systems Department’s degree and certificate programs. She has helped develop programs that support the special needs of the adult learner including a version of CIS 101 with a service-learning component entitled Computers for Human Empowerment and the CLOUT and NACTEL programs.

Established in 1991, CLOUT is an employment directed computer applications and office skills training program for underemployed, low-income individuals in Westchester and New York City. The program includes an Associate in Science degree, as well as credit and non-credit bearing certificates.

Dr. Hale has co-authored books in end-user computing and regularly presents at conferences on topics related to end user computing and distance education. She has worked collaboratively with colleagues from OSRA (Organizational Systems Research Association) and industry to develop and implement global standards for an End-User Computing Curriculum. Colleges and universities throughout the world have adopted this curriculum.

Established in 1997, the National Coalition for Telecommunications Education and Learning (NACTEL) provides online degree and certificate programs designed to prepare network technicians. Dr. Hale and Dr. David Sachs have co-directed the program for 15 years with the support of The Council for Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL). The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation provided the initial funding for this project. In addition, the program received a grant from the U.S. Department of Education Fund for the Improvement of Post Secondary Education (FIPSE).

Barbara Farrell

Barbara Farrell (Pace University, USA)

Dr. Barbara Farrell is a Professor at Pace University teaching in both the School of Business and the School of Computer Science and Information Systems. Having taught at Pace for the last 30 years, Dr. Farrell teaches Accounting in both the traditional classroom setting and online in the Lubin School of Business as well as teaching online in the asynchronous NACTEL Program in the School of Computer Science and Information Systems. Dr. Farrell has taught many courses in accounting from Introduction to Financial Accounting through Advanced Computer Auditing. Additionally, she has taught Computer Applications and Math classes in the asynchronous environment as well. She has also had extensive experience teaching in the corporate classes. These classes included CMA review classes and various computer applications classes for corporations such as IBM, Readers Digest and many others. Recently, Dr. Farrell has been instrumental in developing courses taught asynchronously in the NACTEL program. Courses developed in conjunction with other faculty include Technical Math, Computer Applications, an Online Orientation, and Academic Skills – A refresher math class. Prior to entering education, Dr. Farrell was an auditor in both public accounting and in the private sector specializing in Computer Auditing.

Susan Kannel

Susan Kannel (CAEL, USA)

Since joining the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL) in 1999, Susan led the development of an industry-led online education initiative in the telecommunications industry, The National Coalition for Telecommunications and Learning (NACTEL, www.nactel.org) and contributed to the early development of a parallel initiative in the energy industry, the Energy Providers Coalition for Education (EPCE, www.epceonline.org ); she has served as NACTEL’s Executive Director since 2001. In her broader responsibilities at CAEL, Susan leads the team that creates learning-to-work strategies for employer and association clients, including career and education advising, career pathways and mapping, customized college partnerships, innovative pipeline solutions, and working with employers to evaluate corporate training and prior learning for academic credit, with particular focus on telecom, energy, healthcare, bioscience and manufacturing.

Prior to her time at CAEL, Susan was the Director of Corporate Partnerships, and later the Director of Corporate Education at Regis University in Denver, CO. She has spent her career at the intersection of higher education and corporations, with particular attention to the development of the entry and mid level workforce.

Susan frequently writes and speaks about trends in talent management, higher education, and the effective use of technology in adult learning. She has a Master’s of Adult and Community Education from Colorado State University.

Frank Mayadas

Frank Mayadas (Sloan Foundation, USA)

A. Frank Mayadas, Ph.D. At the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, Dr. Mayadas is involved in a number of areas: online education, globalization of industries, industry studies, and career choice in technical fields. He started the Sloan online learning program in 1993. This program (known as Asynchronous Learning Networks or ALN) has had a profound impact in moving the field forward. Members of the Sloan Consortium now number over 1400. Dr. Mayadas has been a keynote speaker at several distance education conferences and has testified before Congress on web-based learning.

Kathleen Ives

Kathleen Ives (The Sloan Consortium, USA)

Kathleen S. Ives, D.M. has worked in online technology for over 20 years and serves as The Sloan Consortium's Associate Executive Director  and Chief Operating Officer where she oversees the organization's operations as well as facilitates workshops in higher education online best practices. Formerly, Dr. Ives oversaw all forms of alternative instruction at Quinsigamond Community College in Worcester, MA (distance learning, accelerated programming). She teaches in on-ground, online, and blended modalities for University of Phoenix and Bay State College in Boston, MA. Additionally, she serves on the Massachusetts Department of Education Distance Learning Advisory Board.

Dr. Ives began her career at CBS and helped to develop the service that evolved into Prodigy. She then spent fourteen years designing and implementing consumer online information services, first at AT&T and then at Verizon where she spearheaded the development of the nation's first online Yellow Pages product, now called superpages.com. Dr. Ives has degrees in communication, communication management, and organizational leadership from the University of California at Davis, the University of Southern California, Annenberg School of Communication, and the University of Phoenix-Online, respectively.

Nelson Baker

Nelson Baker (Georgia Tech, USA)

Dr. Nelson Baker, dean of Professional Education at the Georgia Institute of Technology and associate professor in the university’s School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, leads a multifaceted operation at Georgia Tech Professional Education. The division is comprised of the Global Learning Center, Georgia Tech-Savannah, the Language Institute, and an extensive program of professional education courses in science, technology, engineering, and math, with online professional master’s degrees, as well as an array of distance learning courses, both credit and noncredit.

Baker particularly seeks to create and assess ways in which technology impacts the learning of engineering students. His award-winning work has generated projects such as multi­lingual web-­based intelligent simulations for problem solving; intelligent tutors; student models; an online faculty assistant tool for creating course objectives; and a variety of technology-based assessments and virtual reality interfaces for education.In addition to his role as dean, Baker serves as the U.S. principal investigator for a FIPSE Atlantis programme grant (P116J090074), an international activity exploring quality management and benchmarking of continuing engineering education programs; and also as a co-principal investigator on a five-year NASA project, Electronic Professional Development Network (ePDN), which develops and delivers STEM content to high school teachers.

In February 2012, Baker was appointed by Chancellor Huckaby to serve on the University System of Georgia's (USG) Distance Education Task Force to create a framework to better coordinate and guide the future use of distance education for the 35 colleges and universities within the USG system. He currently serves as the President of the International Association for Continuing Engineering Education, and is past-chair of the Georgia Board of Regents Administrative Committee on Public Service and Continuing Education. Baker is a board member for the University Professional and Continuing Education Association, and is an active member of ASEE and ASCE.
