Are you new to the Online/Blended Landscape? This Pre-Conference workshop helps learn key concepts to help you get the most out of your learning experiences.

(This is the face-to-face version of the OLC Institute’s online workshop and serves as a prerequisite for those new to online education wishing to progress further in the field by enrolling in the OLC Online Teaching Certificate).

Extended Abstract

This is the face-to-face version of the OLC Institute's online workshop and serves as a prerequisite for those new to online education wishing to progress further in the field by enrolling in the OLC Online Teaching Certificate.

An essential component of successful online teaching is experiencing online learning for yourself. Gain important online learning experience as you explore critical differences between teaching online and face-to-face, including faculty and student expectations, role adjustments, and course design. Your explorations will include research-based readings and discussions with other new online teachers. This exploration will culminate in a quiz that will help you focus your future online teaching skills and knowledge explorations.

Learning Objectives:
Upon successful completion of the workshop, you will be able to:

Describe differences in course design, roles, and expectations for online courses
Explain relevant research impacting course design, roles, and expectations in online courses

The following general outcomes apply to all Sloan-C Institute workshops:

Develop skills in distance education and online learning
Expand current knowledge and skills in online and blended teaching and learning strategies
Develop grounding in the pedagogy of online teaching and learning

Sandra Coswatte

Sandra Coswatte (Online Learning Consortium, USA)

Sandra Coswatte has worked in higher education over 15 years and currently serves as the Director of the OLC Institute. She has worked with Sloan-C since 2008 in a variety of positions such as workshop facilitation, mentoring, production, and social networking. Former work experience was gained at West Virginia University, Lesley University, Wentworth Institute of Technology, University of Phoenix and Urban College of Boston Sandra has earned a B.A. in psychology and a M.S. in Community Agency Counseling from California University of PA as well as a M.A. in Higher Education Leadership and Administration from West Virginia University.

Brian Udermann

Brian Udermann (University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, USA)

Brian Udermann is the Director of Online Education and a Full Professor in the Department of Exercise and Sport Science at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Sports Medicine from St. Cloud State University, and earned both his Masters (Health and Physical Education) and Doctoral (Science Education/Exercise Physiology) degrees from Syracuse University. Brian has over fifty national and international presentations, has published five book chapters and one book and has published over 50 peer-reviewed scientific manuscripts. He currently facilitates online workshops through the Sloan Consortium on a variety of topics related to online education, serves as a mentor to roughly two dozen faculty who are actively developing online courses, and is leading a group of online education administrators from all institutions across the University of Wisconsin-System. Brian is passionate about online education and welcomes every opportunity he gets to share best practice teaching strategies related to online learning.
