Abstract

Classroom teachers and professors who are teaching in blended, flipped, and online learning formats have so much to do and so little time. How can they afford better formative assessment? Take away best practices in online formative assessment and also learn how to provide great student feedback---in much less time. And leave with impactful new tools.

Extended Abstract

New Assessment Tools and Feedback Approaches

  • Audio and voice-thread feedback on submitted work
  • File-casting
  • Doc-casting
  • New assessment apps and sites
  • Assessment embedded within video
  • Assessment with cell phones
  • Bonus Content: Assessment tools "chop shop"

Five Big Ideas

  • HOT assessment versus NOT assessment
  • Serious peer review using a rubric or formal critique
  • Scaffolding for complex projects - multiple submissions, building incrementally
  • Assessment through metaphor
  • Badges
