The What and Why of an Unconference

Unconferences are unique. No, really! No two unconferences are ever the same. That’s because unconferences are what you make them. They assume the form of those who attend, and are flexible to the needs and wants of the learner. This means that they are much more active, with participants taking control of the agenda, content, and conversation. We will help by providing a basic infrastructure and helping keep things organized, but this is the opportunity to really make the conference your own.

Unconferences are organized and conducted differently depending upon the sponsoring organization or group. At the Sloan-C Blended Learning Conference & Workshop, we encourage attendees to participate actively and fully in Unconference sessions by introducing a topic of interest to the group and/or engaging in discussion with other participants about topics of interest. Active participation is the hallmark of our Unconference sessions.

We sincerely hope you will join us for the Unconference sessions on July 8 for an afternoon of conversation, networking, and expansion of what you learned and shared at the previous conference sessions.

Should I Attend the Unconference?

Yes!  Well, we think so. If you answer yes to any of the following, you will likely find value in the unconference session:

  • Are you a registered attendee of the 2014 Sloan Blended Conference?
  • Do you sometimes find yourself thinking “I wish they had covered X,Y, Z more deeply” in regular conference sessions, and wish you had the chance to ask further questions or expand on that content yourself?
  • Are you looking for ways to speak up at the Sloan Blended Conference?
  • Do you ever get that person in your presentation who asks the perfect question, leaving you to wish you had known them in time to collaborate, or that they’d asked the question before you started so you could have incorporated the answer?
  • Do you like interacting with colleagues to expand on ideas, share techniques and models, and debate current trends?

If these things interest you, arrange your travel to accommodate a later departure – they are what the unconference is all about.

How the Unconference Will Work:

1. Sign Up for the Unconference Session

2. Submit and Vote on Topics in Advance via IdeaScale

  • IdeaScale is a web service that allows you to submit and vote on topics, and leave comments on others. We will use this service to gather as many topics and votes as possible for the Unconference session.
  • You can indicate on the Google Form if you’d like us to sign you up for an account. Then, all you have to do is verify the e-mail when you receive it, and start participating at http://sloanc.ideascale.com.

3. Submit and Vote on Topics at the Conference

We will have the current topics and votes displayed so you can keep track of where things stand, and continue to submit ideas as you have them.

4. Come to the Unconference Sessions on July 9:

  • 1:30 PM – Gather in the Unconference room and review the topics and votes; select top three topics
  • 1:45 - 2:45 PM- Break into groups and discuss the top three topics. (The individuals who submitted the topics will facilitate each of these three groups, and a scribe will be assigned for note-taking and organizational purposes.)
  • 2:45 - 3:00 PM - Short break
  • 3:00 - 3:15 PM - Reconvene and revisit the topics and votes
  • 3:15 to 4:15 PM - Break into groups and discuss the next three highest voted topics. (Again, the individuals who submitted the topics will facilitate each of these three groups, with a scribe assigned for note-taking and organizational purposes.)

As topics are submitted, the Unconference organizers will identify and invite individuals from the conference program presenting on similar topics to participate in the Unconference to ensure a variety of expertise and perspectives.
