In this session, you will learn how to create a video and develop a video assignment that encourages student participation and peer-to-peer learning.

Extended Abstract

Don't relish grading another hundred boring papers again this semester? Incorporate a video assignment in each course that you teach! Meet students in their natural habitat by using technology to engage them in the teaching and learning process. Information will be shared through a Prezi including examples of a video script, a student created video, and grading rubric. Learn how to use smart phone apps to create a video that demonstrates a skill you teach every year. Session participants will learn to write a short script, video a one-minute magic trick (or choose your own skill) using a smartphone, and then quickly develop a grading rubric. Leave in the bloopers as this adds to the fun and aids in memory retention of the skill. Using small groups, we will discuss development of video assignments that would encourage student creativity and peer-to-peer learning. At the end of the session, you will be able to guide students in creating videos for peer learning

Dr. Cindy Hayden's doctorate in health education concerns teaching psychomotor clinical skills online using streaming video. She has published articles and presented at eight regional and national conferences about using video to teach clinical skills. Dr. Hayden and Dr. Melba Custer currently teach at Eastern Kentucky University in the Occupational Therapy Master's program. They co-teach a blended course about Therapeutic Modalities in the professional therapy program. In this course students are required to develop a teaching video about using electrical and thermal equipment in therapy as an instructional tool for peer-to-peer learning.
