This presentation explores trends in adult higher education, and the emergence of competency-based education as an optimal adult-serving programming format.

Extended Abstract

Adult learners are a vital segment of today's higher education landscape. Looking ahead, colleges with distinctly adult-serving models are poised to capture an ever-greater share of this continually growing, and ever-changing, student market. Critical to implementing a successful adult learner strategy is curricular innovation through competency-based education, a unique educational format Eduventures projects will drive future momentum in the adult learner market. Competency-based education providers a new, and many argue more effective channel for delivering engaging, highly personalized, and outcomes-orientated programming aligned with adults' practical needs and the demands of an ever-evolving workforce.

This presentation focuses on recent trends in adult higher education, including national enrollment trends, adult learner needs and preferences, and adult market segmentation. It weighs the advantages of competency-based education as an optimal adult serving model, and provides leaders with practical and actionable recommendations for implementing a next stage market strategy.
