A case study presentation exploring best practices for creating strong, effective learning communities in video conference classrooms

Extended Abstract

This presentation covers a detailed case study focusing on the successes of the video conference classroom model at Fuller Theological Seminary. The presentation will include aspects of appropriate pedagogy; classroom management and design; and community building strategies, focused on creating an equitable experience for all students. Two primary aspects are at the center of this topic: engagement and integration. First, we will discuss strategies to improve engagement between teachers and students at all sites. Second, we will discuss ways to create a unified class experience between the primary site and the secondary site(s). This includes implementing a flipped classroom model and using student centered activities to create a class community. Implementing these upgrades have resulted in a significant increase in our student evaluation scores and overall user preference for this class format among faculty and students. Finally, we will discuss planned improvements for this modality in future terms.

Lead Presenter

Jeff DeSurra has been an Instructional Designer at Fuller Theological Seminary since September 2012. He has worked primarily with instructors in online-related formats, including fully online, hybrid, and video conference formats. Jeff worked to redesign and implement new pedagogical models at Fuller Theological Seminary for their video conference classrooms. Jeff has also worked to bolster the support of students and faculty through the creation of new training media. Jeff is presenting at the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities Conference in June 2015 on video conference classroom management.
