For more than a decade, online learning has been hoped to provide better data about the student learning experience. After all, if the majority of interactions are via computer and the Internet, can’t we measure it? With MOOCs came a new wave of hype on the potential power of data analytics. The reality is that Learning Analytics is at the beginning of a long road to efficacy. A consortium of institutions and suppliers has taken a first step by putting in place open standards – Caliper Analytics and the Sensor API - that will enable access to data at lower cost. It will be up to more institutions to join this movement to enable widespread gains from learning analytics. This presentation will examine where we are and suggest a few simple steps that any institution can take to help create the future of learning analytics.

Lead Presenter

Rob Abel, CEO of IMS Global Learning Consortium will outline the key characteristics of the digital learning environment and digital education ecosystem of the future based on the latest insights from from EDUCAUSE's NGDLE (Next Generation Digital Learning Environment), Unizin, Gartner Group and IMS. Change is in the wind. Open standards that enable plug & play digital resources, learning tools, real-time analytics and competency-based strategies are either in the market or nearly there. However, are higher education institutions ready for dramatic leaps forward in flexibility and data? This new generation of learning environment will go hand-in-hand with evolving strategies and leadership much like that required when wide spread online learning and use of LMS's first took hold over 10 years ago. No one has all the answers but new collaborations are beginning to shape this next generation and new opportunities for collaboration among leading institutions are emerging.
