This presentation provides an overview of implementing a rubric to improve online course design standards within a community where anything goes.

Extended Abstract

Institutes of higher education are all subject to meeting accreditation standards in addition to local governance standards and sometimes state standards. More recently, accrediting agencies have published new standards for online learning programs.

To meet and exceed these standards continuous improvement in course design is required. To accomplish this Suffolk County Community College (SCCC) implemented the use of an online course design rubric.

This presentation will describe how SCCC implemented an online course design rubric to promote a standard of continuous improvement within its Distance Education program. Session participants will walk away with best practices and pitfalls towards implementing this type of assessment tool within their own programs.

The presenters will identify the timeline, the staffing needs, the training, the budget, and the promotional outreach needed for a successful implementation. Questions such as "how to gain faculty buy-in" and "where to start" will be addressed.

The effectiveness of the rubric will be determined using:
1. a faculty self-review of their course,
2. a peer-review of the course design,
3. student learning outcomes analyzed over a 4 semester period,
4. student satisfaction surveys,
5. and faculty satisfaction surveys.

Participants will be engaged through the use of polling questions, and interactive Q&A discussion. Participants will be given an interactive activity to promote the development of an outline for implementing a rubric within their institutions. Lastly, participants will be able to identify the main elements required to implement a rubric for online course design within an institution of higher education.
