Abstract

The trials, tribulations and successes of an online, higher education, lab-intensive course using a virtual environment as seen by the various course production members.

Extended Abstract

Join our team of faculty and staff from Penn State at the College of Information Sciences and Technology (IST) as we go under the hood of a new course design for Big Data Analytics. This session will examine a higher education technology course focusing on Big Data which utilizes a virtual lab environment to deliver a hands-on course experience for online students. We will discuss our approach to confronting pedagogical, project management, and technical challenges that arose during the development process. Along the way, we will cover the ups and downs experienced during the design, development and course launch phases, in addition to lessons learned from the entire process that may aid others looking to incorporate more interactive and technologically advanced learning experiences to the online classroom.

Lead Presenter

Before joining Penn State World Campus as an instructional designer, Ravi was a secondary math educator. Here, he employed various teaching strategies, including the use of technology, to engage and motivate students. As a student in a blended Master's program, he reinforced his constructivist philosophies and investigated different ways to captivate and energize students in his high school/middle school math courses.

Now, as an instructional designer for the College of Information Sciences and Technology, Ravi uses his classroom teaching experience and knowledge of instructional design to team with faculty and multimedia specialists to create dynamic online courses that use various approaches for all learners to succeed. He also teaches an online Discrete Mathematics course and applies best practices in instructional design and his teaching experience to run this successful course.

Ravi earned a BS in Mathematics with a concentration in Education at Elizabethtown College and an MS through Philadelphia University in Instructional Design and Technology. His primary areas of interest within the field of instructional design are bridging the distance gap between teacher and student using various communication approaches. Ravi's professional experience includes participation in a research team focusing on gaming, simulations, and virtual worlds and how they can be applied to education.
