Explore MERLOT functionality with a focus on "openness," developing ePortfolios and OER's and demonstrate how California institutions build communities using OERs discovered/shared/created with MERLOT platform.

Extended Abstract

Open Educational Resources (OER) have been available for more than 10 years and have been incorporated into instruction by a growing but still small number of instructors. And even fewer instructors have made available for sharing their own, home-grown instructional materials as OER's for reuse by others.

MERLOT, which has been in existence for more than 15 years, has mostly focused its attention and promoted its value to instructional practitioners whose primary responsibility has been classroom teaching, particularly in higher education. However, as an exceptionally valuable tool for OER community-building, the system has begun to be appreciated by librarians and administrators who see MERLOT as being critical for carrying out the mission of their institution.

This workshop will present some of the unique functions of MERLOT, the manner in which the system and its community fit into the world of "openness," how instructors can use MERLOT to develop shareable and reusable course ePortfolios, and how the MERLOT Content Builder can be used to build OER's that contribute to institutional missions. The workshop will also provide examples to illustrate how California institutions are building MERLOT communities based on OERs discovered, shared, and created through use of the MERLOT platform.

Lead Presenter

Barbra has been the Manager of Technical Development for MERLOT for 10 years. Prior to that she was the Webmaster for the website almost since its inception 18 years ago.
