Team members from Michigan Virtual Learning Research Institute, a division of the Michigan Virtual University, present current studies they are conducting around the US.

Extended Abstract

In 2012, the Governor and Michigan Legislature passed legislation requiring Michigan Virtual University (MVU¨) to establish a center for online learning research and innovation -- Michigan Virtual Learning Research Instituteª (MVLRIª). The goal of the MVLRIª, or the Institute, is to expand Michigan's capacity to support new learning models, engage in active research to inform new policies in online and blended learning, and strengthen the state's infrastructures for sharing best practices. Each year, staff is required to work on a variety of projects, typically 15-20. To augment the Institute work, MVLRI engages state and national experts and distinguished researchers in K-12 online learning from K-12, higher education, and private industry through our Fellows program. In this session, MVLRI team members will share more information about what they do and highlight a few of the many studies they are currently conducting around the United States. Included in these studies are program evaluations of blended learning initiatives; annual effectiveness report on K-12 online learning in the state of Michigan; college admissions offices and their perceptions of K-12 online learning; creation of online teacher endorsement pathways implemented by multiple state, regional, college/university, and local stakeholders; and students' locations (using census data locale codes) and their achievement. Additionally, some of MVLRI's Fellows' work will be shared, including work exploring quality assurance measures in K-12 online and blended learning and mentor certification in relation to student success in virtual schools.

Lead Presenter
Kathryn KennedyKathryn Kennedy is a Senior Researcher at Michigan Virtual University's Michigan Virtual Learning Research Institute. She earned her Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction with a concentration in educational technology from the University of Florida. Her research and practice-based interests include educator preparation for technology integration and instructional design in traditional, blended, and online learning environments.
Joe Freifhoff

Joe Freidhoff is the VP of Research, Policy, and Professional Learning at Michigan Virtual University. Dr. Freidhoff earned his Ph.D. in Educational Technologies from Michigan State University and specializes in data-driven decision making, analysis of student and teacher performance, course evaluation, data optimization and online learning policy.

Kristen DeBruler

Kristen DeBruler, Ph.D., joined MVU as Researcher for the Michigan Virtual Learning Research Institute in 2012. She received her doctorate in Educational Psychology and Educational Technology from Michigan State University. Dr. DeBruler taught in the Master of Arts in Educational Technology program at Michigan State University for three years. Her research focuses on preparing K–12 online teachers and supporting K–12 online students.

Rebecca Stimson

Rebecca Stimson, Senior Writer, joined Michigan Virtual University’s Michigan Virtual Learning Research Institute in 2012. Stimson has English Education credentials and a B.A. in Urban Development-Urban Education from Michigan State University. In addition, she earned an M.A. in Educational Policy Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She taught personalized developmental reading and writing at Lansing Community College for six years and has over 25 years of experience writing and editing for a variety of audiences.

Justin Bruno

Justin Bruno began working with the Michigan Virtual Learning Research Institute as a Research Associate in 2013. He earned an M.A. in Gifted Education at Louisiana State University, holds secondary social studies teaching certificates in the states of Louisiana and Michigan, and has worked as a teacher in both states. He is currently pursuing an Ed.D in Educational Technology from Boise State University.
