Abstract

This presentation reviews innovative best practices and research findings from Austin Peay State University to maximize student engagement and participation in online discussions.

Extended Abstract

Have you ever taught an online course and felt that the discussions were lacking? Perhaps you were left wondering why the students did not put much effort into their responses to the discussion questions, or felt frustrated by their lack of interaction with each other on the subject matter. Perhaps you could see that they were only "checking the box" by posting the bare minimum amount of information that was required to earn participation points.

Join us in an informative session as we review innovative best practices and research findings from Austin Peay State University that will help you maximize student engagement and participation in online courses. We will equip you with the necessary tools to combat the various challenges that instructors face as they facilitate and assess successful online discussions.

In this session, experienced faculty members will facilitate a conversation via partner and large group communication as we review our findings regarding the best ways to engage students in online discussions. Bring your smartphone or tablet to participate in an interactive exercise as we demonstrate some creative techniques that you can incorporate into your next online course discussion.

Educators who teach online courses in any discipline, at any level, will benefit from the insights provided in this presentation.
