Abstract

Learn how Valencia College has built a culture around learning-centered assessment and how faculty use analytics to improve student engagement and pathways for success.

Extended Abstract

In 2004, Valencia College was among the first 26 of 300+ institutions (today) working with Achieving the Dream to figure out how to build a culture of evidence. A key lesson from this work was that institutional reform requires a shared vision of student success, data that helps to clarify the student experience, and a plan to bring people together in order to develop a common understanding of the path to improvement.

Valencia College has implemented a set of "big ideas" to work toward student success initiatives and improving student success. One of these big ideas is that the purpose of assessment is to improve learning, and that assessment must be designed around learning.

Recognizing that data on student performance across the system was an essential first element in uncovering where the institution could get the most lift on student performance, Valencia College partnered with Civitas Learning to implemented predictive analytics applications that could help those at the front lines of education shape more effective pathways - intentionally.

This session will share the institution's journey to building a culture around learning-centered assessment, and implementing predictive analytics applications - working hand-in-hand with faculty to assess their power and purpose of using analytics to improve student engagement, performance, and overall success. Moreover, speakers will share how predictive analytics are powering the institution's DirectConnect initiative - established in partnerships with University of Central Florida (UCF) to build better pathways for transfer students.
