Abstract

Leveraging gamification's potential for engagement within Blackboard holds a promise for instructors that is easy to consider.

Extended Abstract

Leveraging gamification's potential for engagement within Blackboard holds a promise for instructors that is easy to consider. The 2014 Blue Horizon Report in Higher Education states that gamification is an up and coming trend that can develop skills to solve complex, social and environmental challenges.

Consequently, the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley developed and implemented a gamification framework, which applies best practices and quality standards to their Blackboard online and hybrid courses. This framework provides a means of using Blackboard tools creatively, such as items for storytelling, achievements for badges, and clever application of adaptive release within learning modules, to apply game thinking, game elements, and game mechanics into non-game environments.

Attendance in this session will provide participants with the following: 1) a blueprint for developing a gamified environment aligned to course objectives, and 2) examples of a gamified framework for use in hybrid and online courses.
