Social media in the classroom, when used properly, can enhance student engagement and learning outcomes.

Extended Abstract

Social media has altered the way we communicate in our personal and professional lives: one of the biggest debates today is whether social media has revolutionized or hindered effective communication. Often it is viewed as a distraction or a hindrance to productivity, human interaction, learning objectives, etc; and unfortunately, this is the experience of the majority of academicians. Furthermore, this disparity is further compounded among traditionally relational cultures (including but not limited to African-Americans and Hispanic-Americans) (Jordan 2010) who comprise the majority of HBCU populations. However, if incorporated and used in a creative and supportive way, social media can actually enhance the classroom experience for both the teacher and the students as well as improve the effectiveness of learning outcomes, in all classroom environments, but especially that of diverse classrooms. In this interactive and engaging workshop, participants will not only learn several practical ways social media can be incorporated optimally in their classroom, but also begin to discuss and design their own customized social media campaign for their classroom. Social media best practices and industry impact / relations will also be discussed.

Lead Presenter

Marcus ÒDr. A.Ó Alexander earned his Ph.D. in Human-Computer Interaction, an interdisciplinary,

entrepreneurial and technological based discipline, from Iowa State University in May 2008. He also

simultaneously earned his MBA with dual Management Information Systems (MIS) and Marketing

specializations from Iowa State University in May 2007. In addition to his unique education and industry

experience, Dr. A. has a strong passion for mentoring and empowering young men of diverse


Dr. A.(as he is affectionately called by his students) has successfully taught undergraduates, graduates,

experienced industry professionals and professors, both in-classroom and online (as well as in hybrid

learning environments) for over fifteen years. As a full-time professor, he regularly and directly teaches,

mentors and advises across the spectrum of entrepreneurial, MIS and marketing topics. These topics

include (but are not limited to) innovative problem solving, new multimedia marketing, primary and

secondary consumer research, technology integration, process and project management, competitive

intelligence, consumer behavior and segmentation, and creative business solutions. As a result of his

interdisciplinary and innovative breadth and depth, Dr. A. regularly collaborates across disciplines for

real-world solutions of dynamic, modern entrepreneurial challenges.

As a lifelong learner, Dr. A. views his role as a facilitator of information sharing, empowering students to

take an entrepreneurial approach toward education. As a result, his learning-centered teaching methods

include active class participation as well as critical, creative thinking on how to best apply concepts and

principles toward real-world business issues via the use of innovative technology. In addition to using

innovative technology to enhance his pedagogy to appeal to students' multiple learning styles, Dr. A.

maintains strong relationships with interning firms, such as INROADS, for practical internship

opportunities for students.

To further complement his entrepreneurial teaching experience, Dr. A. has practical industry experience

in project and process management, SWOT analysis, public relations as well as business and competitive

intelligence. His breadth and depth of industry experience complements the interdisciplinary nature of his

innovative business teaching as he has served as a project manager and analyst (among other roles)

during employment with Intel Corporation, Duke Energy and Bank of America. Furthermore, in 2008

Dr. A. founded his own business, QuinEx (short for Quintessential Experience) which specializes in

innovative multimedia marketing solutions and technology integration/transition services and consulting

for small businesses, entrepreneurs and non-profit organizations. He incorporates these real-world

entrepreneurial and industry experiences in his teaching, mentoring and research.

Similarly, Dr. A.'s research interests reflect the advantages of his interdisciplinary and innovative

diversity of experience, truly incorporating a synthesis of the broad range of disciplines and experiences

needed to tackle current and future entrepreneurial challenges. By incorporating innovative,

interdisciplinary research and experiences in his teaching, Dr. A. is able to provide students with unique,

holistic perspectives for critical thinking, development and mentoring.

As an educator, entrepreneur and investor, Dr. A. is humbled by the honor and privilege to share his

vision and message of enlightenment, encouragement and empowerment in genuine hope that more and

more young people will share their unique light with the world by pursing and realizing the optimal potential of their dreams.
