Extended Abstract

This presentation will provide examples of current efforts to impact retention in online for-credit programs at Penn State World Campus. Among the interventions to be discussed are 1) embedded professional tutors 2) online professional tutoring 3) retention coaching 4) math interventions 5) faculty opportunities to influence retention and 6) advising focused retention among others.

Data driven decisions helped us create a unique "recipe" for retaining online adult learners. Russo-Gleicher's research revealed faculty believes successful online student retention is a combination of improving student screening and preparation, administrative support, and faculty engagement. We have had several interventions at Penn State World Campus and this presentation will focus on a few retention initiatives comprised of student support services and highly involved faculty that have led to student retention and academic achievement.

The goals for the presentation are to share retention strategies, data, and to encourage others to strategize ways to collaborate to improve student success and retention to meet the needs of today's online students. In addition, the session will provide for opportunities for participants to share their best practices and retention challenges at their home institutions.
