Abstract

OLC's Advanced Online Teaching Certificate designer and facilitator joins with a certificate participant to discuss the overall experience as well as outcomes and results.

Extended Abstract

Professional development options for seasoned, experienced, online faculty are sometimes limited, due to the overall institutional focus on developing new online instructors. As a result, experienced online faculty may not have formal professional development opportunities that encourage reflection about their teaching practice or experiences that make use of current research and best practices in online teaching and learning.

OLC's Advanced Online Teaching Certificate Program is an option that could help fill these professional development gaps. The Advanced Online Certificate Program helps educators with 3+ years teaching online to fine tune an existing online course using the OLC Pillars of Quality in Online Education. It is specifically targeted to experienced online faculty who wish to improve their online courses through the inclusion of active learning strategies, multimedia, social media components, and stronger assessment practices.

Attendees will look at the Advanced Online Teaching Certificate from three perspectives: Dr. Laurie Hillstock will share perspectives as the certificate designer and cohort facilitator; Tina Rettler-Pagel will share perspectives and specific "before and after" examples as an experienced online educator and certificate participant.

Attendees will be engaged through discussion and Q&A. By the end of the session, attendees will be able toÉ
1. Examine key factors in the design and facilitation of the Advanced Online Teaching Certificate
2. Identify the benefits of participating in the Advanced Online Teaching Certificate
3. Describe strategies certificate participants used to effect change in their online courses
