Abstract

This presentation will share the plan developed to fix major issues with a small private non-profit institution's online programs and address online retention.

Extended Abstract

I will briefly discuss the proposal that I submitted to my institution's Vice President that identified weaknesses in our online programs and a promise of a plan to fix them. The proposal was approved by the VP, and it led to a new administrative position which I was offered and accepted (Dean of Online Programs) and a new Virtual College Support Dept. that oversees our online programs. Upon receiving this position, I reinstated our Quality Matters subscription, we became a member of the Online Learning Consortium, and I developed a 5 year strategic plan.I will share what we have done since January 2015 to put new processes, policies, and procedures in place. I will focus primarily on the work being done in 2015 and 2016, years one and two of the plan. This covers a broad range of implementations such as new delivery expectations for faculty, a new Moodle theme and template design that starts the process of preparing courses for QM certification as well as accessibility, curriculum work, and new professional development requirements for faculty that will integrate QM, OLC, and in house training. My institution is going through a huge shift with regard to how our Virtual College is managed and for the first time since we started offering online courses in the early 2000s, our online programs are receiving their own identity through branding, new and separate management structures, and new faculty that are separate from the traditional ground campus.
