Learn how UCF's open source Universal Design Online content Inspection Tool (UDOIT) is helping faculty detect and fix common accessibility issues in online courses.

Extended Abstract

UCF has a long standing commitment to diversity and accessibility. One of UCF's five goals is to become more inclusive and diverse. Being a large public institution with a strong commitment to online learning this is an ongong challenge for faculty teaching online. Faculty learn about making online course materials accessible during faculty development, but do not have a way to check their courses for any potential accessibility issues before a student who needed an accommodation is enrolled.

To help faculty be more proactive, UCF developed the Universal Design Online content Inspection Tool, (UDOIT pronounced, "You Do It") enables faculty to identify course content accessibility issues in UCF's learning management system Instructure Canvas. UDOIT will scan a course, generate a report, and provide accessibility resources, and in most cases present faculty the opportunity to correct common accessibility issues. UDOIT was released to UCF's faculty on May 7th, 2015.

UDOIT was developed with funding from Instructure's Canvas Grant program. It will be released in June 2015 under an open source license for anyone using Instructure Canvas to implement.
Our session will address in detail:

- The Center for Distributed Learning's role in online course accessibility
- Why UDOIT was developed
- Usage statistics
- Faculty feedback
- Updates to UDOIT since release
- Demonstration of UDOIT
- How institution's using Instructure Canvas can obtain UDOIT
