Abstract

How long do students watch video lectures and what influences viewing? Find out using two years of viewing data for a general education course.

An iPad Mini will be given away at the end of the session. Must be present to win.

Extended Abstract

Video lectures are commonplace in online courses, but how much of them do students watch? What are the factors that encourage them to watch and learn more from video lectures? In this presentation, John L. Crow and Dr. Annette Jones, both Instructional Development Faculty at Florida State University's Office of Distance Learning, will share the results from analyzing two years of viewing analytics from a general education, survey of world religions online course offered at Florida State. Using this data, they identify trends and offer solutions. The discussion will include:
- How long did students generally watch videos and how does this compare to other studies?
- What percentage of students actually completely watched all the videos?
- What factors, both within and outside the online course, decrease viewing time?
- What factors increase viewing time and completion?
- What strategies should instructors take when creating video lectures for online courses?
- How has using analytics impacted the course redesign?
