Abstract

Learn the basic skills needed to visually design a course in a learning management system based on an educational model of instruction.

Extended Abstract

Based on the book "Visual Designs in Online Learning" to be released in September 2015 by Jossey-Bass publishers, the workshop will present the basic skills needed to visually design a lesson in a learning management system using an educational model of instruction. Using a free learning management system (CourseSites.Com), participants will create a lesson that applies the educational model of direct instruction, and applies the basic skills of linking to external content, integrating multimedia, enhancing readability using typography, and embedding content at the point of need. To ensure participant success in visually designing a lesson in CourseSites within the three hour time frame of the workshop, the facilitator presentation will demonstrate specific features within CourseSites, highlight best practices in constructing a course in an LMS and provide strategies for common errors. At the end of the workshop, participants will have created a free account to an LMS for which they will have used the basic features, created a lesson based on an educational model of instruction, and will be able to reference the visual designs created long after the workshop has concluded.
