Abstract

Students’ main motivation for pursuing a degree is to increase their ability to find a good job. To help today’s learner fully engage with your program, career preparation activities need to be a part of academic programs from day one. This session will share best practices and real examples for orientation/first year experience programs that want to create connections between academic programs and the 21st century skills that employers want.

Extended Abstract

According to Eduventures, career prep has been the number one driver of enrollment for students since 2013. In fact, in a recent Brookings survey, 86% of students said that getting a better job was very important in their decision to enroll. Yet, only 42% of employers say that students are well prepared for the workplace, and 45% say that lack of skills is the main reason for entry-level vacancies.

In order to attract students and fully engage them in their education, it’s vital to connect educational experiences to the 21st century skills that employers want. This session will present the 8 core 21st century skills that students need and review best practices for orientation programs and first year experience courses that want to help a student draw connections between their education and career skills from day one.

In this session, participants will review example course assignments and reflection activities that help students start the process of identifying and communicating the 21st century skills that employers want. Participants will also receive a sample rubric that advisors or faculty members can use with first year students to help them guide and evaluate a student’s career path.
