Abstract

What can be learned from graduate public health student evaluations of initial blended classes? We examine the data and lessons learned.

Extended Abstract

The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (JHSPH) has 99 years of experience with face-to-face instruction and 15 years of experience providing fully online courses for graduate students. Over the last two years, an institutional effort to increase active learning and flexibility has led to the definition and implementation of blended courses. The school's Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) has been working with faculty to redesign and deliver its first blended courses. We will share and discuss data based on anonymous pre- and post- blended course surveys from both very large (250+) and relatively small (30+) blended classes, to provide insight based on student feedback to the following questions:

What do students know and perceive about blended learning prior to taking a course?
How do student expectations for time, learning benefits, and satisfaction before and after the course compare?
What aspects of blended learning do graduate students most or least appreciate?
What can we do for future iterations of the blended courses to improve them?
How do students perceive engagement with fellow students and instructor?
Do students see advantages in having pre-recorded lecture materials?
What are key recommendations from students for future iterations?

Participants will also be able to view the lecture production process and examples, with room for discussion and Q&A.

Lead Presenter

Since 1993, I have developed, designed, taught, coordinated and managed distance, online and blended learning programs. I am currently Senior Instructional Designer, Team Lead with the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore. Some past international projects include faculty development at the University of Ghana School of Public Health in blended and online learning technologies and techniques, and facilitating blended learning with the SUNY Online International Learning (COIL) Center with the European Humanities University in Vilnius, Lithuania.

Recently published chapters include: "Synchronous Tools in Support of Teaching and Learning." Learning Management Systems and Instructional Design: Best Practices in Online Education. Ed. Yefim Kats., 2013, & "Open Synchronicity for Online Class Support." Learning Management System Technologies and Software Solutions for Online Teaching: Tools and Applications. Ed. Yefim Kats., 2010.

Past awards include a 2010 Sloan-C Effective Practices Award; a 2006 Excellence in Online Teaching award; and my German learning videos from MyGermanClass.com were one of the top 100 People's Choice Video Podcasts from Apple's iTunes. I was a featured presenter at the New Media Consortium's 2007 Online Conference on the Convergence of Web Culture and Video and recently presented at OLC, Educause, and numerous other conferences, and am one of the co-founding Master Chefs for the OLC Technology Test Kitchen. Aside from fostering rich learning environments, I love biking with my family, dub reggae, rock steady and minimal ambient music, brewing beer, snowboarding, raising hens and lunchtime yoga.
