Abstract

Attend this session to hear how educational technology helped students to improve writing and critical thinking skills.

Extended Abstract

Laurie Linhart teaches Introduction to Sociology in a flipped/face-to-face format at Des Moines Area Community College. She conducts frequent assessments throughout the semester as both a measurement of how well students are learning and a tool for giving them critical feedback, which she feels is an essential part of the learning process. Students are required to complete MySocLabs Study Plan Post-Tests and selected Writing Space assignments prior to coming to class. Writing Space was designed to help students master course content while developing critical thinking skills through writing. It provides a single place to create, track, and grade writing assignments, supply writing resources, and quickly and easily exchange meaningful, personalized feedback with students.

Since this was the first semester implementing Writing Spaces auto-feedback assignments, the instructor decided to start slowly and only require two writing assignments

Lead Presenter

My name is Dr. Laurie Linhart and I've been teaching sociology for the better part of my adult life -- 23 years to be exact. My Master's and Ph.D. are from Iowa State University. I have a full-time faculty position at Des Moines Area Community College in a suburb of Des Moines, Iowa. My research interests are quite broad and I consider my self to be a symbolic interactionist. I'm married to a wonderful person -- my soul mate Curtis Linhart who is undoubtedly the best personal trainer and yoga instructor in Iowa. We have two Scotties and a big fat orange cat. I love to bike, run and do yoga when I'm not doing sociology!
