Extended Abstract

According to a 2013 AACU survey, more than 75 percent of employers say they want to see competency in graduates in key areas including: critical thinking, complex problem solving, written and oral communication, and applied knowledge in real-world settings. Institutions are using educational technology to improve student success in college and the workforce.

Specifically, Houston Baptist University (HBU) redesigned its face-to-face General Psychology course by integrating MyPsychLab with Writing Space. Writing Space was designed to help students master course content while developing critical thinking skills through writing. It provides a single place to create, track, and grade writing assignments, supply writing resources, and quickly and easily exchange meaningful, personalized feedback with students.

Attend this session to hear how the implementation helped to improve students test scores and positively affected student learner outcomes. For example, average final exam scores increased 12 percentage points. Frequent assessments and personalized learning helped students better prepare for exams. As a result of the implementation, students had multiple opportunities to write about course material, which helped improve their conceptual understanding while developing their critical thinking skills.

Hear from Professor Vicki Alger, who will share how she effectively empowers students to spend time writing -- helping students to achieve a deeper understanding of course content, while developing important writing and critical thinking skills, essential for college and career success.

? Understand how HBU helped to improve students final exam scores through the use educational technology
? Hear how online learning tools helped students earn more A grades in the course compared to previous semesters without use of educational technology.
? Learn how educational technology helped students develop critical thinking skills, which, when applied to the material, lead to a deeper understanding.
