This information session will discuss technological and administrative challenges of teaching online courses for Chinese students who are in China.

Extended Abstract

Designing a course to be delivered in a hybrid/blended/flipped format for students who are on the other side of the globe is very challenging due to many aspects, mainly technological and administrative. All of these challenges governed the process of the course design as well as impacted the final product. In this information session I will demonstrate the design of my social and global networking course that I teach now online for Chinese students (who are in China) and how the course design was responsive to the technological and administrative challenges. The session will cover the main challenges and solutions, as follows:
Challenges -- Administrative: The average class size is about 45 students per section.
Problems -- A lot of grading and time spent responding to students' e-mails.
Design Solution --Adjust the assessments schedule, implement group projects, list clear and explicit instructions to avoid FAQs received via e-mail.

Challenges --Technological: Most of the well-used web tools for online courses available in the US are blocked in China: YouTube, Google Apps, Wikipedia etc.
Problems --Limited content resources and technology tools.
Design Solution --Look for alternative Chinese web tools to integrate/use that are not only blocked in China but also the students are familiar with. Designing a course to be delivered in a hybrid/flipped format for students who are on the other side of the globe is very challenging due to many aspects, mainly technological and administrative. In this showcase, I will share the design of my global and social networking course that I teach now online for Chinese students who are in China.

After attending this session, audience will learn the current challenges for online instruction and design of courses to be taught in China, solutions and workarounds to be used to overcome technical and administrative issues.
