July 7, 2015 - 3:30pmAnne Paine (Apex Performance Solutions, USA)Teaching & Learning EffectivenessInformation SessionGovernor's Square 10Concurrent Session 250 MinutesIn today’s business climate, certifications are a must to demonstrate validity and current knowledge. As a general rule, these certifications are very demanding and require intensive study and memorization. We have found that it is a struggle for people to learn the material on their own. In fact, studies have shown that people learn much better in a group setting. However, group training presents its own challenges including forming a group and keeping the group engaged, interested, and on track. We have solved this problem within our Project Management Professional (PMP®) study course by adding gamification. With gamification, we have provided an online component to the training, including learning games, weekly challenges, posted leaderboards and other gamification strategies. By creating this blended learning approach, we have certified our Project Managers at a 97% pass rate. Anne will show all aspects of this very successful program that was created to certify Project Managers.

A key distinction this presentation will address is the difference between identity authentication and identity verification. In a blended learning scenario, a professor may pass around a roll sheet in class that students sign. This is a very minimalistic and insecure form of identity verification that can be defined as a single factor component that relies on seeing the same person consistently return. This analysis will tie in how fraud is affecting higher education and possible reasons why fraud is growing in blended and online programs across the United States and what institutions can do to combat it.

In the last decades, the power of data mining and analytics has transformed practice in field after field. In this talk, I will discuss how this trend is transforming instruction in higher education. Increasingly, large-scale data is available on student learning and interaction online. Much of this data represents student behavior in a fashion that is both longitudinal and fine-grained. This has allowed researchers to model and track many elements of student learning that were not previously feasible at scale: engagement, affect, meta-cognition, collaborative skill, and robust learning. In turn, these models can be used in prediction of long-term student outcomes, and to analyze the factors driving long-term success.
I will illustrate this potential with examples of how our lab has studied engagement and learning in several contexts, including students learning data mining from a MOOC, biology undergraduates learning genetics from intelligent tutoring systems, undergraduates learning how to program, and military cadets and medical residents learning core medical skills. I will discuss how we track disengagement, the processes leading to robust or shallow learning, and the factors leading learners to long-term participation in a community of scientific practice. -

Do your eyes glaze over after consuming dozens and dozens of final projects (bet you thought I was going to say donuts!), typically reports or essays submitted by your students at the end of each semester? Your students are probably just as tired of the same old diet.
Participants at this session will try out the recipes for three alternatives to the bland diet we use to have students show and share their knowledge. Digital tools for infographics, brochures, and blogs are often free and easy to use, and they are all excellent ways to add zest to the final project for you and your students. And a well designed assignment will allow them to creatively demonstrate their new knowledge as well. -
