Using Intranets Conferencing for Online Faculty Training and Support to Augment an Already Comprehensive Plan for Online Faculty Support

Supporting Information for this Effective Practice
Evidence of Effectiveness:

Faculty Feedback: Online faculty responded positively to the e-mail announcement of the new Intranets Conferencing, and the online faculty who have made use of the feature found it extremely helpful and convenient. Many online faculty members have testified to the usefulness of Intranets Conferencing in a recent Online Faculty Resource Room online faculty meeting. Our goal is to make training, support, and ongoing dialog as convenient as possible, so we meet frequently in the Center to share effective practices and discuss common challenges. All our online faculty meetings are held there as well. These comments were posted in the Discussion Board during our last Online Faculty Meeting in the Online Faculty Resource Center: Posted in the online faculty meeting discussion: As one of the first "students"...I can attest to the fact that it's a great way for a new online instructor to learn. It was so convenient and extremely informative. The fact that [Mary Jane] was on the phone while we were both on our respective computers was very helpful, as I could ask her right then and there if I had a problem or question. Posted in the online faculty meeting discussion: I had a conference with Mary Jane and Eric and it was great! I really enjoyed the discussion on the telephone as well as the process of the conference. It was truly amazing! Whenever I need help, that's the way to go! If you have questions, they were answered right away. It was a telephone conversation with an actual demonstration of a concept. Great! Here is an e-mail from a professor who was away from campus: Last month I was given my first on-line course to teach this upcoming fall. I was somewhat hesitant. Because I have taken the summer off and would be traveling quite a bit, I thought that I would not be available for the training that would entail. However, I was reassured...that I would be given real-time assistance through Intranets conferencing. It indeed proved to be a real help. I have been working on my course and have not had to leave home to attend on-site conferences and workshops. When I have questions, I contact Dr. Clerkin, and she guides me through the solution to my problem. Administrative Support Our Academic Dean has also been very pleased with our use of Intranets Conferencing: "Although most of our online professors also teach onsite, we have a growing number of offsite professors who benefit from this new program....Intranet Conferencing has been invaluable recently in the training of online faculty....It has been of particular use with faculty who are familiar with using technology but just need help with specific aspects when developing or updating their online courses....Our online program is growing and some of our online faculty are now living in states which are not within computing distance from our campuses. Using Intranets Conferencing has enabled Mary Jane to provide the same level of service to these faculty as to others that she can meet with face-to-face." We have a very formal process for workshop evaluation. Our workshop surveys are posted online for the convenience of our online faculty. However, Intranets Conferencing is new, and our Director of Institutional Research has just posted an Intranets Conferencing survey, which we plan to start using in the next few weeks. Intranets Conferencing also has a View Conference site where all conference transcripts may be found. The time and date of the conference, when an attendee has entered the conference and left, etc.are all documented within the Intranets Conference. There is also a Polling Transcript and an Attendee Question Transcript. Intranets Conferencing has brought our training and support to a new level. We have the usual onsite workshops and open labs, a special introductory course for our new online faculty, Road to Success in Online Teaching; designated faculty mentors by discipline; and our totally online one-stop shopping center Online Faculty Resource Center; however, Intranets Conferencing provides a special anywhere anytime component to an already convenient and flexible plan for online faculty training and support.

How does this practice relate to pillars?:

faculty satisfaction: Busy online faculty members appreciate online faculty training and support that is comprehensive, efficient, and as convenient for them as possible. Accordingly, Berkeley College has added Intranets Conferencing to its already comprehensive plan for online faculty support. By adding Intranets Conferencing online faculty are provided with quick, real-time, travel-free training and support. A Camtasia video was developed to provide simple directions and all online faculty members have to do is to e-mail and schedule an appointment, pick up a phone when called, click on an e-mail link that brings them to the conference site, fill in their name and e-mail address, and join a conference that will allow them to develop or modify an online course, incorporate media, and have their questions, problems, and concerns attended to quickly and easily anywhere and any time.

Estimate the probable costs associated with this practice:

Intranets Conferencing costs $199 a month.
